Here are 6 things you should never do or add to your skin care routine:

  1. Makeup remover

Many makeup remover napkins contain alcohol. When used as a makeup remover, it strips the skin of not only makeup but also natural proteins, oils, and fatty acids that fortify our barrier, keeping irritants out.

  1. Parabens

There are several studies linking parabens to cancer. Parabens mimic estrogen and can cause breast cancer. Longer chain parabens like propyl butyl paraben and their branched counterparts, isopropyl and isobutyl parabens, may disrupt the endocrine system and cause reproductive and developmental disorders. Look for products labeled paraben free.

  1. Retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate, retinoic acid and retinol.

These ingredients are mainly found in anti-aging products actually have the opposite intended effect and can become carcinogenic under sunlight. It is very important to use these products at night and avoid using sunscreens containing retinol-derived ingredients.

  1. Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is a skin bleaching chemical. FDA warns its addition to skin care products because it can cause skin disease called ochronosis, which causes disfiguring and irreversible blue-black lesions on exposed skin.

  1. Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen linked to leukemia, pancreatic and skin cancer, skin irritation, and cirrhosis. This ingredient is sometime inconspicuous, meaning that it is not listed all the time on a product label. It can be found in nail polish, eyelash glue, and hair smoothing and straightening products.

  1. Picking and popping

Stress is real, unavoidable, and unfortunately ubiquitous. All of us have it, it is human to stress after all, but not all of us deal with it the same way. Some of us hurt our skin by scratching and picking on it, especially over pores and spots. Squeezing, popping, and scratching at your zits creates a lot of inflammation in the skin, leaving behind scars and discoloration. Chronic breakouts should be managed with medical regimen specific for your skin type and acne. Also, it is not a shame to ask for help to find a way to channel away your stress from your skin to something better.

As a rule of thumb listen to your skin, if it stings or hurts that’s your skin telling you not to use that. If you read something on the label of a product that you don’t agree with or don’t understand or recognize, look up that ingredients and study its down side.
